About Mangalitza
Once widespread in their native Hungary, Austria, Romania and Serbia the breed fell out of favour and was threatened with extinction. Through in-situ (with the country) and ex-situ (outside of it) conservation measures the breed was saved. The first animals arrived in the UK in 2006, bringing as wide a genetic base as possible to establish the breed. The breed was not unfamiliar to Krisz as they were prized at home for special events, superior taste and exceptional fat. There were multiple recipes for every part of the animal. The rise of the Mangalitza in the UK was slow to start as the breed needed to get established. Our first animals were actually crossbreds purchased with the sole purpose of meat for the table. The results were exceptional in flavour quality and from that day it was the ambition to develop a pure herd. Our foundation stock came from the Quickbourne herd and we welcomed Atila a `Wonder' bloodline boar and three 'Bonny' bloodline gilts, Blanka, Marja and Opi. We have introduced some 'Curly' bloodline genetics and look to expand the female lines into 2024. Our pigs are given Hungarian names, or often named after Krisz's relatives. In my mind an honour rather than an insult as we do have some very well bred pigs! Gabor in the image above, is named aftr Krisz's brother for example..
Why Mangalitzas?
Hardy Breed thrives outdoors
Exceptional Forager
Wooly coat
Our pigs are housed outdoors where they can root, forage, wallow and live in family groups. The characteristic wooly coat of the breed keeps them warm in the harshest of weathers. Mangalitzas love to explore, so ensure they have stockproof fencing! We use them around the farm for ground clearance and weed management.
The Exceptional Taste
Marbled carcass if matured
Higher levels of Monosatuated fat
In Hungary the meat from a slow grown Mangalitza is legendary. We produce pork, sausages and sometimes bacon for home and sale through our Farmers Markets. The best pork we have produced is from 18 month old animals, that had beautiful marbling in the product. Mangalitza meat has more monosaturated fat than other breeds, and a healthier balance of Omega 3 to Omega 6 than seed oils.
Outstanding Mothers
Fierceless protective, be careful!
We have kept/bred most of our native breeds of pig at Hollybush Farm. None are a patch on the Mangalitzain terms of nest building and maternal protection. Do not interfere with a mother and piglets! The arrival of every litter of piglets causes excitement. They are always striped and can be blonde, red or swallow-bellied.
